Characterization of Defects in Magnetic Flux Leakage Images

چکیده
One of the most challenging scientific industrial problems in recent years is automatic defect detection and characterization. Automatic defect detection can replace human operators who locate and identify defects. Detection of defects in the steam generating tubes through periodic inservice inspection is one of the most significant issues of the fast breeder reactors. Among various pipeline inspection technologies, Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Non Destructive inspection is the most prevalent and perfect one. The image of the pipeline is obtained by MFL technique. The obtained image is undergone preprocessing. Then defect region is identified and detected by segmentation (K-means and Thresholding) techniques. The main aspire of this paper is to characterize the defects. A simple and efficient algorithm was developed to characterize the rectangular notch and flat bottom hole defects in MFL image. The length and width of the defect were obtained using the characterization algorithm.

Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) Sensors for Non-Destructive Detection of Magnetic Flux Leakage from Sub-Surface Defects in Steel
There is an increasing demand for using high sensitive sensors which can detect very low levels of magnetic flux leakage from hidden defects or far-side wall loss due to pitting or local corrosion in ferromagnetic steels. This paper discusses the use of highly sensitive tiny GMR sensors for detection of sub-surface defects in carbon steel plates. Notches located at different depths below surfac...
متن کاملModeling and Signal Processing of Magneto Optic Images for Aviation Applications
Magneto-optic imaging (MOI) is a relatively new technology that produces analog images of magnetic flux leakage from surface and subsurface defects. An alternating current carrying foil serves as the excitation source and induces eddy currents in a conducting test specimen. Under normal conditions, the associated magnetic flux is tangential to specimen surface. Anomalies in the specimen result ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Acoustic Emission Inspection of Oil Tank Floor via Tank Bottom Plates Thickness Measurement
This paper deals with an inspection of defects including corrosion and leakage by Acoustic Emission (AE) in an oil tank floor. In contrast to intrusive methods such as magnetic flux leakage, eddy current or ultrasonic, there is no need to emptying and entering the tank in AE method in order to inspection. In this research AE investigation and AE source location is presented in detail. The resul...
متن کاملNew Techniques for the Quantification of Defects Through Pulsed Magnetic Flux Leakage
Although the probability of defect detection using magnetic flux leakage (MFL) inspection is sufficient for most applications for which it is used; inspection of ferromagnetic pipeline, wire rope, etc., accurate defect characterisation is problematic. The use of pulsed excitation in conjunction with MFL provides an opportunity for the extraction of depth information from the MFL signal using an...
متن کاملMagnetic Flux Leakage Pigs or Ultrasonic Pigs? the Case for Combined Intelligent Pig Inspections
This paper describes a case study where a pipeline operator was faced with features in the pipe wall that proved difficult to conclusively identify. An ultrasonic (UT) pig inspection indicated that the pipeline contained numerous deep external defects. However, subsequent excavations indicated that the reported external defects were in fact mainly laminations and/or inclusions. To verify that t...
